Shpali i be vendvarreza komuniste.

Perjete te jeteve u kujtofshin Martiret e Mirdites.

Our very first event will be the unveiling of the new Martyr Memorial located at the Church of St. Paul – Kisha Shpalit.

This site has been the cornerstone for many meetings and events throughout Mirdita’s history, it is the circle of history of the Five Bajraks. It has endured the onslaught and has been a meeting point, and the most suitable place in the Northeast to receive the followers from the depths of the mountains, the hills of Mbishkodra, the banks of the Drini and Buna, the shores of Mat and the basin of central Albania, where the most important events are the descent of the mountaineers under the command of Kapidan Marka Gjoni in the war against the rebellion of Haxhi Qamil.

We will not delve deeper than we should in the very old history of Shpal because the current time requires us to concentrate on the meanings of the more recent events in the town of Shpal, Mirdita.

The first of such event in modern times, followed the efforts of Prince Prenge Bib Doda to increase the number of Bajraks of Mirdita, where Kapidan Gjon Marka Gjoni, on May 29, 1928, gathered the leaders of the Five Bajraks, in Shpal to reinforce the Besa (Pledge of Honor) for Mirdita and Homeland.

The second most important event involved Kapidan Mark Gjomarkaj. Arriving home, after graduating with honors at the University in Italy, Kapidan Mark Gjomarkaj realized the vital need of the North-Eastern mountains to be represented by a leader of Mirdita and the Dera e Gjomarku. Soon thereafter, the name of Kapidan Mark Gjomarkaj was politically ranked among the all Albanian names by two great Albanians; Father Gjergj Fishta and Mustafa Kruja. Before assuming the position of Deputy Minister of Interior, Kapidan Mark Gjomarkaj was the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Economy and insisted on the completion of the Zog Bridge; which would complete the paving of every segment of the national road Zog Bridge – Fand Bridge – Shpal – Fushe Ares. He was instrumental in the completion of this road. The communists found the road paved.

The last event was a tragedy indeed. The infamous brigades, during the conquest of Mirdita, ran from the Fanit Bridge to Geziq, fired rifles on the Church, landed in Shpal and around it, burned homes, slaughtered cattle, filled trucks with innocent women and children and sent them to exile and prisons. But the most cruel communist event was what happened in Shpali Gorge and the torture of the anti-communist lifeless bodies, in particular Captain Llesh Gjomarkaj and Nikolle Prenge Lleshi. This Mirdita nobility was dismembered in Shpali gorge and thrown into the abyss. The cave became a communist cemetery. Also in the abyss of Qafes e Valmerit fourteen Mirdites were buried alive and somewhere in front of the hill of the abyss, after being dismembered, they were painted with flour to kill the wild birds. The Albanian anti-communists have a grave here under the sky even though their bones were never found.

On this hill, we have recorded the names of many who do not yet have a tomb to revive their memory, the memory of the “Martyrs of Mirdita”, Martyrs who shine in Paradise and are at rest in the arms of Jesus Christ.

May the Martyrs of Mirdita be remembered forever.
